Quick Learn

Hexadecimal is a byte-for-byte view of data — every byte (a number from 0 to 255) is written as exactly two hex digits, so "H" (byte value 72) becomes 48, "e" (101) becomes 65, and so on. It's the representation you see in hex dumps, memory inspectors, network packet captures, and debug logs whenever a tool needs to show you exact byte values rather than a rendered, potentially misleading text view.

This tool encodes through UTF-8 first, so multi-byte characters — accented letters, emoji — show up as the multiple bytes they actually occupy, matching what you'd see in a real hex editor or a Wireshark capture. Decoding accepts hex with or without spaces between byte pairs (48 65 6c 6c 6f or 48656c6c6f both work), since copy-pasted hex dumps use both conventions depending on the source tool.

Best Practices

  • •A hex byte is always two digits (00–ff) — a stray single digit or an odd total digit count means something got truncated during copy-paste.
  • •Hex dumps from different tools use different separators — spaces, colons, 0x prefixes, or none at all. This decoder strips everything that isn't a hex digit, so any of those formats works without pre-cleaning.
  • •Not every byte sequence is valid UTF-8 text — random or binary hex (like a compiled file's bytes) won't decode to readable text here, since this tool assumes the bytes represent UTF-8-encoded text, not arbitrary binary data.
  • •When comparing hex output against a hex editor or debugger, check whether that tool is showing uppercase or lowercase digits — the byte values are identical, only the letter casing (a–f vs A–F) differs.
